More on Teaching Baby Sign
This morning, I taught the daycare kids the sign for "more". We practiced with oranges. If the kids wanted another orange, they had to sign "more". I realized that this sign is the easiest for kids, and heard from my mom that it's one of the first signs babies learn.
So far, I've taught them "thank you", "please" and "more". My mom was curious about how to say "you're welcome" and after a google search, we learned that in American deaf culture one doesn't really say "you're welcome". Rather, they will give a thumbs up in response.
I was really surprised when one of our younger toddlers, who doesn't use complete sentences yet and is still in a high chair, signed "more" while saying "more". I also teach our younger toddlers, and the baby who is almost a toddler by holding their hands when we learn the signs. But, this time, the girl just watched me sign and copied.
Next week, I will teach "all done", "sorry" and "hello". I watch the kids Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and teach one sign a day, as well as go over the other signs we've learned. I'm excited that my mom, who owns the daycare, and my sister-in-law, who also works for her, use the signs with the kids too whenever the opportunity comes up.
