Teaching Kids Languages

Learn_with_chi

I've created a new blog with Nila, the girl I babysit, that's goal is to make learning Japanese fun and interesting for kids. It's called Learn with Chi. My ulterior motive is to get Nila to study without feeling too pressured and as if she's doing more school work after her school day is over.

When she looked at the blog yesterday, she read over Chi's name in katakana without realizing it was in Japanese. Funny thing is, she hadn't even read the entry where it introduces the character's names in katakana and romaji.

I have quite a few episodes of Chi's Sweet Home on an audio CD to play in the car. Today, while picking her up, she said, "This is what I learned yesterday," noting that the episode was from the blog.

Something I'm proud of, I managed to put javascript onto Posterous! I used iframes and pastehtml.com to do so. Normally, Posterous doesn't allow javascript. I added a Chi's Sweet Home blog badge to the new blog, and Shuwa Island's blog badge to this blog as part of my effort to create an immersive shuwa environment. It's a small step. I hope this weekend to start labeling things in shuwa around my room, and to work on making a shuwa anki deck.

Another thing, earlier this afternoon I came home from school and went to see the daycare kids in the playroom. One of the girls, preschool age, called out to me and said while signing in ASL "thank you". This really made me smile! It was like I had been given a present. I had taught the kids yesterday that sign and was seeing just a little response. At first, no one wanted to sign it (-_-). But now they seem to be getting into it. Tomorrow, I'm going to teach them, "please".
